Coriant optimizes Hyperscale Carrier Architecture (HCA) for multi-access edge compute and cost savings

Feb. 27, 2018
Coriant announced that it has optimized its Hyperscale Carrier Architecture for multi-access edge compute (MEC), offering cost savings of more than 50% that of traditional architectures. The upgraded HCA is also aligned to open networking industry initiatives, including Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter (CORD).

Coriant announced that it has optimized its Hyperscale Carrier Architecture (HCA; see "Coriant offers Hyperscale Carrier Architecture vision") for multi-access edge compute (MEC), offering cost savings of more than 50% that of traditional architectures. The upgraded HCA is also aligned to open networking industry initiatives, including Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter (CORD).

Earlier this month, Coriant introduced a Multi-Sided Platform Partner Program to extend Coriant portfolio's service value (see "Coriant extends portfolio service value with launch of Multi-Sided Platform Partner Program"). By integrating the HCA with Coriant's Multi-Sided Platform program, the architecture delivers an optimal environment for straightforward 5G, revenue-generating IoT, high-speed cloud, flexible packet data center interconnect, the industrial internet, and an array of open ecosystems, the systems house says.

The Coriant HCA's open networking design enables customers to choose from a what the technology vendor describes as a best-in-class hardware and software portfolio to attain their network, service, and business goals, and increase hardware, software, and service speeds at the same time. According to Coriant, the portfolio elements are built with open interfaces that accelerateintegration into SDN control. They are also designed with orchestration ecosystems forrapid deployment, automation, and seamless operation of networks and services consisting of disaggregated components.

Coriant plans to use Mobile World Congress 2018 this week to highlight the upgrades to its open networking HCA, as well as additions to the Coriant Transcend Network Control and Orchestration Software Suite. Coriant will also highlight the new Coriant Vibe Series of Programmable Packet Platforms to support seamless horizontal scalability, and the Coriant IP/MPLS Network Operating System (C-NOS), an open, disaggregated approach to packet-based networking.

"In today's fast-paced and highly competitive services market, network operators need to evolve their multi-layer infrastructure networks to maximize the value of faster innovation cycles in hardware and software components and best-in-class functions and solutions," said Uwe Fischer, Coriant's executive vice president, R&D and PLM, and CTO. "One of the key challenges that operators face is the limitations imposed by proprietary approaches that result in vendor lock-in, especially in the IP routing domain. Our Hyperscale Carrier Architecture breaks that stranglehold and accelerates new service deployment by leveraging an open hardware and software ecosystem that unlocks the barriers to seamless automation and the virtualization of network functions across network layers."
