Zayo's new long-haul dark fiber network to link Reno and Umatilla

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. said it has plans for a new long-haul dark fiber network between Reno, NV and Umatilla, OR. The route is anchored by a webscale customer that Zayo has not named. According to the company, the route is also generating interest from additional customers.

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) said it has plans for a new long-haul dark fiber network between Reno, NV and Umatilla, OR. The route is anchored by a webscale customer that Zayo has not named. According to the company, the route is also generating interest from additional customers.

The fiber-optic network route will be entirely underground, linking the city of Portland to the city of Umatilla via Prineville, OR. Adding over 600 route miles along the western U.S., the network expansion builds on the Portland and Umatilla route that Zayo announced in 2017. The expansion offers a diverse route between Portland and other key West Coast cities, says Zayo.

Reno's proximity to Silicon Valley, economical real estate and industrial power, and appealing tax environment position the city as an expanding data center hub for webscale companies, Zayo attests.

"The new route completes a piece of the puzzle that the western U.S. needs to connect the dots between content companies' core data center locations in a way no other carriers can provide," said Jack Waters, CTO and president of Zayo's Fiber Solutions. "As more companies add data centers in Oregon and Nevada, Zayo is well positioned to provide them with high-capacity fiber infrastructure."

This announcement follows Zayo's agreement to acquire substantially all of Neutral Path Communications and Near North Partners in January, adding 452 owned plus additional leased route miles to Zayo's North American footprint, including a unique, high-count fiber route (see "Zayo acquires Neutral Path Communications and Near North Partners assets to expand North American footprint").
