GRNET completes test carrying alien wavelengths across 510 km using ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect

ADVA Optical Networking said that Greek research and technology network GRNET has successfully completed a joint field trial to carry alien wavelengths across 510 km of GRNET's current WDM infrastructure. The field trial involved transporting 100-Gbps and 200-Gbps third-party wavelengths over GRNET's network, which stretches from Athens to Crete.

ADVA Optical Networking said that Greek research and technology network GRNET has successfully completed a joint field trial to carry alien wavelengths across 510 km of GRNET's current WDM infrastructure. The field trial involved transporting 100-Gbps and 200-Gbps third-party wavelengths over GRNET's network, which stretches from Athens to Crete.

The FSP 3000 CloudConnect was integral to the tests, as the data center inerconnect (DCI) platform is designed for scalability and bandwidth optimization, says ADVA. Voyager, the open packet transport system designed by Facebook for the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), was leveraged as well. To manageboth technologies and the multi-vendor architecture, standardized open interfaces were implemented.

Using standard interfaces for multi-vendor management and orchestration, the tests demonstrate the importance of optical network disaggregation and SDN-based openness, says ADVA. IT solutions provider ADAPTIT, a partner of the company, was also part of the field trial collaboration.

"Today's service providers are facing fundamental challenges," said Andreas Jelinek, ADVA senior director, sales, Eastern Europe. "Keeping pace with ever-increasing data demand is simply impossible without a fundamental change to network architecture. As this trial demonstrates, service providers now have the power to leverage unprecedented value from their deployed infrastructure."

ADVA's announcement about the success of the joint field trial involving Voyager comes just days after Cumulus Networks said that Cumulus Linux is now available for early access on Voyager through the company (see "Cumulus Networks announces availability of Cumulus Linux for early access on Voyager"). Cumulus listed GRNET as among the test cases for the new software implementation.
