NYSERNet chooses ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect for New York R&E fiber network

April 17, 2018
ADVA (FSE: ADV) says it has delivered its FSP 3000 platform to the New York State Education and Research Network (NYSERNet) for deployment in a statewide fiber network that can support native and alien wavelengths of 200 Gbps. The open infrastructure fiber-optic network will leverage automation capabilities as well as most if not all of the FSP 3000's most advanced capabilities to help NYSERNet provide internet access to education, research, and health care institutions in the state.

NYSERNet will leverage a host of advanced hardware and software features to maximize the fiber network's agility and automation. These include ADVA's CloudConnect shelves, OpenFabric Optical Transport Network (OTN) cross-connect technology, and route-and-select, flexgrid-capable ROADM architecture. The CloudConnect shelves include QuadFlex line cards for increased capacity. Meanwhile, the FSP Service Manager will enable NYSERNet's operators exercise control of the network as well as the ability to actively track, manage, and remotely support the new infrastructure.

"ADVA's engineers have worked closely with us to ensure that this new solution addresses each of our specific networking demands. We now have a highly flexible and sustainable transport system – one that's open, fully redundant, and able to provide our member institutions with access to next-generation bandwidth and optical services," said Bill Owens, CTO, NYSERNet. "ADVA's flexible and scalable technology empowers us to maximize our resources and prepare for a multi-terabit future. With this deployment, we're ensuring world-class opportunities for faculty and students and helping our academic community stay at the forefront of scientific research."

NYSERNet added 100G capabilities to its fiber-optic network in 2013 with systems from another vendor (see "NYSERNet taps Ekinops for 100G fiber network upgrade") The alien wavelength capabilities of the FSP 3000 may come in handy in this regard.
