In the Synergy Q3 2007 Router/Switch Worldwide Market Share Report, market research firms Synergy Research Group (www.srgresearch.com) and Current Analysis (www.currentanalysis.com) note strong growth across both the Carrier Ethernet and service provider segments, with Juniper Networks and Nortel as the growth leaders in market share and revenue, respectively.
According to the report, in 3Q07 the service provider segment drove the worldwide router market, posting 29% year-over-year growth. Nortel posted an impressive 80% revenue growth quarter-over-quarter, making it the growth leader in the service provider segment followed by Tellabs (64%), Foundry Networks (23%), Extreme Networks (18%), Juniper (17%), and Cisco (12%).
The demand for Carrier Ethernet was also evident, posting year-over-year growth of 32%. Most notable was Juniper, achieving its highest market share position to date in the Carrier Ethernet market. Other gainers in market share include Cisco, Extreme, Foundry, and Nortel.
The disruptive impact of converging high-demand network traffic such as video, multicast, unicast, peer-to-peer, and Web 2.0 across carrier networks is driving increased carrier IP investment at the edge and core of networks worldwide, says Ray Mota, PhD, chief research officer, Synergy Research Group.
The report also covers vendors 3Com, Enterasys, Force10, Redback, Riverstone, Siemens, and Thomson. The router/switch market is segmented based on Synergys technical and market expertise, and the numbers are derived from a methodology that reconciles vendor reported shipments (bottoms-up measurement) with publicly reported revenue results (top-down measurement).
