CommScope introduces carrier-grade wideband edge QAM system

CommScope Inc., a provider of infrastructure solutions for communications networks, is introducing an all-digital, carrier-grade wideband edge quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) system, the LxS-16016.

With the new CommScope LxS-16016 wideband edge QAM, the company is continuing to expand its product offerings to multi-system operators (MSO). A dense, scalable QAM system is vital to supporting more advanced, next-generation services over HFC (hybrid fiber coax) networks, says a spokesperson.

“Cost-effective, scalable QAM is critical to supporting the applications that are growing in importance, such as video on demand, switched digital video, broadcast video, DOCSIS, and cable IPTV on the same physical redundant radio-frequency (RF) port,” says Shane Eleniak, vice president, Advanced Broadband Solutions, CommScope. “MSOs now have the opportunity to seamlessly add bandwidth as needed in the most cost effective manner. The CommScope LxS-16016 wideband edge QAM introduces our customers to an entirely new era for enabling new service offerings.”

The CommScope LxS-16016 wideband edge QAM offers up to 160 QAM channels on each of 16 RF (radio-frequency) ports totaling 2560 QAMs in a small, redundant 4 RU chassis. Its density provides cable operators the flexibility of rolling out new services in the future without the need for costly truck rolls or disrupting service.

By directly digitizing the 1 GHz band, the LxS-16016 wideband edge QAM achieves superior RF and enhanced remote control flexibility, according to a company representative. Additionally, the density of this new solution can help operators reduce capital and operating expenses by lowering power consumption, requirements for power, cabling, rack space, and cooling.
