Corning Cable intros facade cabling for MDUs

Corning Cable Systems LLC, part of Corning Inc.’s (NYSE:GLW) telecommunications segment, says its new FlexNAP Façade MDU cabling will speed up FTTH deployment.

The FlexNAP Façade MDU is designed for medium- and high-rise buildings with multiple customers per floor and limited or hard-to-access indoor riser space.

Corning Cable says the FlexNAP Façade MDU expands on its existing FlexNAP System technology for aerial FTTH applications. The system takes advantage of existing installation techniques and equipment, to enable quick customer connections with less time spent inside the building. The preconnectorized offering is factory tested to save time in fiber-optic network deployment.

The core of the system is a prefabricated central riser segment that runs vertically up the exterior of the high-rise from the building distribution terminal. At the floor level, individual factory-prepared breakout points are terminated into a multi-fiber, outside plant-hardened connector. Breakout points are then routed through the façade to the inside of the building, where the connector is terminated inside a floor distribution terminal. Individual customer apartments are connected by horizontal drop cables. Rugged fiber-optic cables along the façade minimize the need for multiple cables and reduce visual impact.

The FlexNAP Façade MDU Solution is based around specially designed components, including the OptiTip connector in the central riser segment, with 4-, 8- or 12-fiber options; the RPDpass drop cable assembly to allow for quick customer connection; drop cables with Corning ClearCurve ZBL optical fiber to offer industry-leading bend performance; and low-loss SC or LC patch cords that can accommodate tight power budgets.
