FTTx equipment specialist Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Brazilian service provider SuperOnda Telecom has deployed Zhone’s MXK platforms and 24xx ZNID terminal units within a fiber-optic network in the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro. The fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband access network will provide service to 3000 homes in the city.

SuperOnda Telecom plans to expand the fiber network to another 5000 subscribers in 2014, and 7000 subscribers in 2015.

The network roll out includes 10G Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) rings via Zhone's MXK Chassis, as well as the deployment of ZNID 2424 and 2426 optical network terminals (ONTs). Zhone asserts that the use of its equipment will enable SuperOnda Telecom to upgrade its optical transport network without a significant investment in metro access gear. The deployment also will make SuperOnda Telecom the only provider of pure FTTH services in the city.

"SuperOnda Telecom chose Zhone's MXK solution to upgrade its equipment, allowing it to remain competitive within the telecommunications market in Brazil," said Jose Carlos da Costa Hungaro, chief executive officer at SuperOnda Telecom. "Zhone helped SuperOnda meet consumer demand by improving high-speed access for its customers."

"SuperOnda Telecom selected Zhone to be its provider because Zhone offered many options for the company: products, support, stability and superior quality," added Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone Technologies. "Zhone's deployment with SuperOnda Telecom, following recent announcements with Ligue Telecom and Klisa Telecom, showcases continued broadband growth and expansion in the Latin American market."
