AT&T has launched a 45-Mbps U-verse service in California and Nevada. Dubbed U-verse High Speed Internet Power, the new tier pairs the 45-Mbps downstream with 6 Mbps upstream. The service provider touts the new service offering as a sign of progress in its Project Velocity IP (VIP) investment plan.

Eligible residential customers can sign up for the service at introductory rates starting at $49.95 per month for up to 24 months bundled with qualifying TV and voice services. Current eligible U-verse Internet residential customers can upgrade their service to the 45 Mbps and receive $10 off their bill for a year.

AT&T will also the new speeds to small businesses, but did not disclose how much the service would cost.

The company says it also will offer the service in other markets “on an ongoing basis.”

“This is our next step in our Project VIP investment plan, and we’re proud to bring customers faster speeds, for a great value,” said Mel Coker, chief marketing officer at AT&T Home Solutions. “The vast majority of our customers bundle U-verse Internet and TV because it gives them a better experience, with faster speeds that fit their needs, at an affordable price. We look forward to bringing wired IP services and faster speeds to more customers in the future.”

AT&T’s Project VIP is an effort to improve the performance and reach of its wireless and wireline networks. It includes a plan to expand the service provider’s wireline IP network to approximately 57 million customer locations by the end of 2015. As of the end of the second quarter of 2013, AT&T says it had expanded its wireline IP network by 1.8 million U-verse broadband customer locations, including 500,000 U-verse video customer locations. AT&T says this puts them on track to reach the 2015 goal.
