International services provider Reliance Globalcom has added 100-Gbps capabilities to its FA-1 North submarine network. The upgrade used converged packet-optical and GeoMesh technology from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN).

The upgrade enables Reliance Globalcom to offer high-speed, low-latency Optical Transport Network (OTN) and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) client services between London and New York. The new capabilities compliment a similar upgrade to the FA-1 South submarine network that links New York to Paris, thus enabling Reliance Globalcom to offer route diversity across the Atlantic.

Ciena delivered its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform as part of its GeoMesh portfolio, which uses optical bypass technology to simplify the end-to-end network design. Reliance Globalcom also will leverage Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System for multi-layer service management capabilities to enable streamlined service activation, fault management, and performance monitoring. Ciena also supplied installation, consulting, test, and turn-up services via its Specialist Services portfolio.

“Growing requirements for access speed in broadband Internet, the digitalization of information, and cloud-based applications continue to drive the need for bandwidth demand. By making strategic upgrades with market-leading technologies such as those provided by Ciena, we are ensuring that we meet this demand in a highly-efficient and cost-effective manner, while providing a superior service experience to our customers,” says Punit Garg, president and CEO of Reliance Globalcom. “This deployment further builds upon a long-standing relationship with Ciena to support Reliance Globalcom’s strategic capacity upgrades on its submarine network.”
