Hutchison, Cisco launch WiseNET CE 2.0 network

Hutchison Global Communications Ltd. (HCG), the fixed-line division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Ltd. (stock code: 215), and Cisco have launched WiseNET – a next-generation network for the Hong Kong public, using the Metro Ethernet Forum Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (MEF CE 2.0) platform.

The companies claim that WiseNET is the first local public offering to adopt the highest Carrier Ethernet industry standard to provide network service.

The combination of HGC's fiber-optic network and the Cisco MEF CE 2.0 certified ASR 9000 Series aggregation services routers (ASR 9000) provide speedy, highly-secure and reliable service that satisfies the most stringent network demands of high-end customers and enhances business effectiveness, the companies claim.

The MEF CE 2.0 certification is designed to ensure the quality of Ethernet services, by establishing standards in three areas – namely multiple classes of services, service management, and interconnection (see “MEF launches Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification program”). WiseNET uses Layer 2 architecture and supports a wide variety of upper-layer applications. Using this intelligent network, customers can establish point-to-point (E-Line), any-to-any (E-LAN), and point-to-multipoint (E-Tree) network architecture simultaneously, thereby enabling customers to enjoy extremely high network flexibility and simplicity, the carrier asserts.

According to the companies, the WiseNET service leverages an ultra-fast network with just under 1-ms latency and service availability of 99.98%. As such, it is extremely well-placed to be the ideal top-end network service for data centers and cloud service providers, while enabling financial institutions to extend securities trading networks to all branch offices, they claim.

WiseNET is cloud-ready, the companies assert. This means cloud service providers can offer services to their end customers in a very short space of time simply by connecting their networks to WiseNET. WiseNET also supports voice and data application visibility, enabling customers to analyze their bandwidth utilization by application types.
