Finnish broadband services provider Elisa has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to supply routers and switches to upgrade the capacity and capabilities of its core network. The enhancement will see Elisa use IP/MPLS technology to improve the scalability and agility of its high-speed network, Alcatel-Lucent asserts.

Elisa serves 2.3 million consumer, corporate, and public administration customers, who will benefit from smoother video downloads, improved service redundancy for increased reliability, and greater responsiveness, the systems vendor adds. The network upgrade also will improve Elisa’s ability to offer new and more personalized services, Alcatel-Lucent says.

Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 7950 eXtensible Routing System (XRS) core router, 7750 Service Router, 7210 Service Access Switch family for aggregation, 5620 Service Aware Manager for management, and a service portal for provisioning. The company also will provide installation and commissioning, lifecycle program management, operations support, and consulting services as well as the capabilities of its Migration Operations Center.

"Finns use the most mobile data per capita in the EU [European Union], which requires [from] us very high standards for being able to fulfill all future needs our customers have,” said Timo Katajisto, executive vice president of Elisa. “The world of our customers will become even more digital as data centers evolve into cloud services and the use of IPTV services continues increasing. Upgrading our core network to the new generation IP/MPLS network will ensure enough capacity and speed for our customers also in the future."
