Aurora Networks, Telefunken Communications partner on FTTH in Germany

Telefunken Communications AG, a German fiber-optic network provider, says it has partnered with Aurora Networks to launch new fast Internet services in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany via a fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure.

Telefunken Communications AG, a German fiber-optic network provider, says it has partnered with Aurora Networks to launch new fast Internet services in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany via a fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure.

Both residential and commercial customers in select communities in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate can take advantage of the new services, which are powered by Aurora Networks’ Unified PON (passive optical network) portfolio. Aurora, which was recently acquired by Pace, specializes in optical access network equipment for the cable MSO market.

Telefunken Communications started construction earlier this year and activated first residential customers in early April. These customers can now enjoy up to 150-Mbps Internet services. In the future, they will also be able to sign up for telephony, digital TV, and interactive on-demand services. Business customers can sign-up for advanced capabilities, including symmetrical data rates of up to 250 Mbps.

"We focus on providing fiber-optic based high-speed broadband services in Germany in areas un- and underserved with other terrestrial networks like ADSL and coax-cable," said Hardy Heine, member of the management board and head of marketing and sales, Telefunken Communications. "Our clear target is to become a leading player and preferred partner for communities in our market. Significant for our expansion strategy in Germany are partnerships with other competent key players in the industry, such as Aurora Networks, so that we can provide our customers with a range of cutting-edge services with the highest quality."

Aurora Networks says its Unified PON portfolio is ideal for operators looking to smoothly deploy a PON architecture, including 10G-EPON as a future capability. It includes high-density and outdoor-hardened chassis platforms, its Node PON platform, a range of optical network terminals (ONTs) for both residential and business applications, and its AurOS software for DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE).
