Huawei debuts 1-Tbps WDM card, 200G photonic integrated device

Huawei backed up its announcement in Nice last week of a new optical transport architecture (see "Huawei unveils SDN-ready optical network architecture") with a pair of technology announcements. The unveilings, which also took place at the Next Generation Optical Networking conference last week, included a 1-Tbps WDM line card and a 200-Gbps photonic integrated device (PID) that mimics photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology.

Huawei backed up its announcement in Nice last week of a new optical transport architecture (see "Huawei unveils SDN-ready optical network architecture") with a pair of technology announcements. The unveilings, which also took place at the Next Generation Optical Networking conference last week, included a 1-Tbps WDM line card and a 200-Gbps photonic integrated device (PID) that mimics photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology.

The line card, for the company’s OptiX OSN 9800 multi-service Optical Transport Network (OTN) platform, is the first of its kind, Huawei asserted. The line card can transmit a 1-Tbps superchannel 800 km without regeneration, the company said, thanks to the use of the Optical Digital Signal Processing (oDSP) algorithm. In a metro configuration, the card can support 20 Tbps per fiber; in long-haul operation, the card enables the OSN 9800 to transmit 10 Tbps per fiber for 3000 km (with this distance using repeaters, it seems likely).

The 200G PID, meanwhile, enables "WDM/OTN to the edge" deployments, Huawei explained. In describing PID technology, Huawei said such devices can integrate lasers, modulators, detectors, multiplexers, and de-multiplexers into a chip that is centimeter-sized.

Huawei has already integrated the 200G PID into its OSN 1800 V. A 400G PID is currently in development.
