ZTE upgrades Telekom Indonesia's Java backbone to 100G

ZTE Corp. (H: 0763.HK / A: 000063.SZ) has been winning more business in Indonesia. After announcing a deal with MNC Kabel Mediacom (see "MNC Kabel Mediacom picks ZTE for FTTP network in Indonesia"), the Chinese equipment vendor says it will help Telkom Indonesia to upgrade its Java backbone network to enable a 10-fold capacity increase in most of the network and deliver a superior user experience to subscribers.

After announcing a deal with MNC Kabel Mediacom (see "MNC Kabel Mediacom picks ZTE for FTTP network in Indonesia"), the Chinese equipment vendor says it will help Telkom Indonesia to upgrade its Java backbone network to enable a 10-fold capacity increase in most of the network.

Spanning the island of Java from West Java to East Java and connecting all major cities on the island, the Java backbone is the busiest backbone network in Indonesia, accounting for the largest total exchange capacity and the highest data growth rate. With the rapidly increasing number of users and fast-changing technology, the upgrade to 100G technology will enable Telkom Indonesia to evolve its broadband business services while improving customer experience, according to ZTE.

ZTE is supplying converged DWDM/OTN equipment to help Telkom Indonesia upgrade the Java backbone network from 10G to next-generation 100G. The new 100G system will coexist with the current 10G system on one optical fiber, thanks to ZTE’s Guard Band technology, which enables the two systems to work simultaneously, the vendor says.

"Because of the vital strategic importance of the Java backbone infrastructure, the network demands high stability and reliability. ZTE has the technology, service capabilities and experience to answer this challenge,” said Gong Ming, chief technology officer of PT ZTE Indonesia.

In modernizing the network, ZTE will provide Telkom Indonesia with its ZXWM M920 DWDM system. The system aims to help Telkom Indonesia to build a future-proof bearer network (DWDM/OTN). Also, the new network will co-operate with ZTE’s NetNumen U31 network management system (NMS) to create flexible, reliable, cost-effective and manageable networks that can scale to enable the deployment of 100G’s new services, the company asserts.

ZTE says its equipment will enable Telkom Indonesia to lower total cost of ownership; deliver high flexibility, scalability; and expansibility; improve reliability and security; ease maintenance; and make network operations, administration and management (OA&M) more efficient.

Telkom Indonesia has been a customer of ZTE for more than 10 years, the vendor says. Between 2009 to 2013, ZTE completed several projects for Telkom Indonesia including network capacity expansion, by adding new 10G wavelengths into the Java backbone network, and also re-configuration projects on the existing link to optimize the network design.
