Viettel, the largest telecom operator in Vietnam, has selected South Korean network equipment provider DASAN Networks to supply the equipment for a fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure that Viettel will use to provide high-speed Internet throughout Vietnam starting this year. The deal is worth $18 million, DASAN says, and calls for the company to deliver GPON systems over a four-month period ending this November. Further orders for GPON FTTH equipment will be forthcoming, DASAN expects.
As a military-run telecommunication company under the Ministry of Defense in Vietnam, Viettel has business operations in eight countries including Cambodia, Laos, Mozambique, and Haiti. Global sales for the company reached $7.73 billion in 2013.
DASAN Networks’ CEO Min-Woo Nam said, “SoftBank in Japan, Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan, and now adding Viettel in Vietnam as our main customer, we are expecting that our base of annual sales in overseas business will increase significantly.”
Overall, DASAN says it currently serves 60 customers and partners in 25 countries worldwide.
