Spanish operator Telefónica has entered into a joint development agreement with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. to deploy fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) equipment, including Huawei’s FastConnect system.

Telefónica set out its FTTH strategy in 2008 and has an ambitious deployment plan that depends on speedy deployment. Telefónica selected Huawei’s customized optical distribution network (ODN) products for its FTTH network, including Huawei’s FastConnect system, which provides an alternative connectivity system for outdoor-hardened fiber-optic connectors. Drop cables are pre-connectorized and support plug-and-play, so no splicing is required on site. Huawei says its FastConnect products are highly reliable, comply with IP68 and they adjust to high-humidity environments and temperature variations from +70 to -40 degrees Celsius.

Daniel Paul, Telefónica Spain access network director, said, “The ODN is a fundamental piece of the FTTH deployment. Huawei, with its adaptability and plug-and-play ODN solutions, such as FastConnect, has improved our FTTH broadband services deployment efficiency and helped to implement our project.”
