tw telecom inc. (NASDAQ: TWTC), a provider of business Ethernet and networking services, says it is expanding its nationwide fiber-optic network by introducing service in Virginia's state capital of Richmond.

tw telecom has teamed up with QTS, a national provider of data center and fully managed services, to provide an expanded product portfolio to customers in its Richmond data center, a 1.3 million square-foot campus supporting enterprise clients, government data center consolidation opportunities, and commercial colocation and managed services.

"Richmond is a growing and thriving community, home to major universities, businesses, military facilities, and state government," said Mike Gearin, area vice president, tw telecom. "We are excited to offer enterprise services throughout metro Richmond with our state-of-the-art Business Ethernet, Intelligent Network, and IP networking solutions as well as access to our ecosystem of cloud services providers through datacenters like QTS."

The Richmond expansion is part of a national multi-market effort by the company to expand its metro fiber footprint across the country this year (see “tw telecom announces expansion plans”). In addition to Richmond, tw telecom has already entered into one other new market – Salt Lake City – and plans to enter into three additional new markets this year – Boston, Cleveland, and Philadelphia. The company is also increasing the density of its metro-fiber footprint in more than a third of its existing markets (see, for example, "tw telecom expands fiber network in Nashville").

Nationwide, the tw telecom network connects directly to more than 20,770 buildings, including approximately 500 third-party data centers, and delivers reach to hundreds of thousands of other locations throughout the country.

tw telecom points out that it was the top-ranked competitive provider of Business Ethernet and one of the top three providers of Ethernet throughout the US, according to industry analyst firm Vertical Systems Group.
