VDSL, GPON spark 2Q14 access gear shipment growth says Dell'Oro

Shipments of broadband access equipment, including PON, DSL, and equipment for cable MSO networks, grew 12% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2014, according to a new report from Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm says sales of VDSL and GPON equipment led the way.

Shipments of broadband access equipment, including PON, DSL, and equipment for cable MSO networks, grew 12% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2014, according to a new report from Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm says sales of VDSL and GPON equipment led the way.

Access network equipment shipments grew in all regions of the world, according to Dell’Oro’s new Quarterly Access Report. Within the segment, VDSL port shipments rose by more than 30%, while GPON optical line terminal (OLT) port and optical network terminal (ONT) unit shipments increased by greater than 40% versus the same quarter of 2013.

"EMEA and North America accounted for the vast majority of VDSL shipments, with Western Europe being especially strong as an increasing number of operators deploy vectoring products, which can significantly increase bandwidth while using existing copper infrastructure," said Steve Nozik, principal analyst of access research at Dell’Oro. "For GPON, China continues to dominate the market, but there was also significant growth in other regions especially Southeast Asia, Southern Europe, and the Middle East."

The trends particularly benefitted Alcatel-Lucent, which maintained a wide lead for the top spot in VDSL port shipments against the next two top vendors, Huawei Technologies and ADTRAN. In GPON, Huawei Technologies and ZTE rode their success in China to the top two places, with Alcatel-Lucent in third.

The Dell’Oro Group Quarterly Access Report covers manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, and port/unit shipments for cable, DSL, and PON equipment. Network infrastructure equipment includes cable modem termination systems (CMTS), DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs) by technology (ADSL, G.SHDSL, and VDSL), and PON OLTs by technology (BPON, EPON, and GPON). The report also covers cable and DSL CPE technology and PON ONTs.
