Cable MSO Cox Communications says it is bringing gigabit Internet service to its residential customers in Virginia.

Cox says it is the first national communications provider in Virginia to commit to a residential gigabit Internet strategy. The company made the announcement outside one of the new home sites at the Viridian Reserve at Hickory in Chesapeake, where the service will first be available in Virginia.

The service is an extension to the company's previously announced plans to roll out gigabit services in Phoenix, AZ, Las Vegas, NV, and Omaha, NE (see "Cox outlines gigabit broadband plans").

When Cox announced availability of gigabit services Phoenix earlier this month, it said it would also be bringing the higher speeds to new housing developments in its service area (see "Cox to offer residential gigabit serves in Phoenix this month"). Viridian Reserve is the first of these.

Cox says it will expand the availability of residential gigabit internet speeds to new developments across Virginia and in Cox locations across the country. It intends to have gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016, delivering a more powerful home network and rich broadband enabled services to customers.

"We are excited about our road map to offer gigabit speeds to all of our residential customers," said Cox Communications President Pat Esser. "We are deploying new technology and infrastructure that will offer our customers the choice of gigabit speeds in all markets we serve."
