Huawei develops 100G TWDM-PON

Oct. 27, 2014
While commercial equipment for 40-Gbps time and wavelength division PON (TWDM-PON) has just been announced, Huawei says it has demonstrated 100-Gbps versions of the technology in the lab. The company says it has achieved 4x25-Gbps TWDM-PON transmission, verified via a lab prototype.

As is the case with current 4x10-Gbps TWDM-PON designs, the 100G-PON technology is compatible with the wavelength plans of GPON-based optical distribution networks (ODNs). The new approach would enable carriers to upgrade their fiber-optic broadband networks seamlessly from 10G GPON through 100G, the company says.

The company has not announced commercialization plans for the technology. Nevertheless, Huawei says 100G TWDM-PON will be able to support emerging high-bandwidth services such as cloud services, smart home services, and 4K or 8K ultra-high definition video. The technology also should support backhaul for fiber to the curb/basement/office as well as mobile backhaul requirements.

Huawei tested the 100G-PON over a 20-km link. The company expressed confidence will be able to support 200 Gbps per port by supporting more wavelength paths.
