Asia-Pacific network services provider Pacnet has chosen BTI Systems’ 7800 Series Intelligent Cloud Connect platforms for deployment in Hong Kong and Tokyo to support metro data center interconnectivity. The systems will support both 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet connections for Pacnet’s ISP and cloud services provider customers.

Pacnet supplies data transport services to a wide variety of customers via an extensive terrestrial and submarine network in Asia that connects to the U.S. (see, for example, "Pacnet provides 100G wave services between Asia-Pacific and United States" and "Pacnet upgrades trans-Pacific submarine cable with Ciena,").

"Our customers include major cloud service providers, Internet service providers, application service providers, telecommunications carriers, and large multinational enterprises that depend on our high-performance networks to keep their businesses ahead of the curve and growing into new markets," explained Pacnet CTO Andy Lumsden, via a BTI Systems press releas. "We have to reinforce their confidence in us every day in terms of high-speed access, quick service turn-up, flexibility, and economics, all delivered with unmatched customer service and support. The BTI 7800 Series will enable us to create a high-capacity metro network fabric, supporting 200G per slot now, and scaling to 400G and 1 Tbps per slot in the future."

Pacnet, an existing customer of BTI’s 7000 Series optical transport platforms and BTI proNX Service Manager provisioning software, has completed the Hong Kong deployment and is about to embark on installation in Tokyo, according to Sally Bament, BTI Systems’ senior vice president of global marketing. The deployments will include both the two-slot BTI 7802 and 14-slot BTI 7814 systems, she said.

Hong Kong and Tokyo are but two of the major metro market areas for Pacnet. While the service provider has yet to tap BTI Systems to supply the 7800 Series for other deployments, Bament said the company was hopeful of further business.

Pacnet has been active in software-defined networking (SDN) technology deployment through its Pacnet Enabled Network (PEN) initiative (see "Pacnet launches SDN-enabled network"). BTI Systems has touted the 7800 Series as SDN ready; however, Bament said the newly installed systems aren’t under the PEN umbrella – "today," she stressed.
