Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says Silver Star Communications has selected E7-2 and E7-20 Ethernet Services Access Platforms (ESAPs) and 700GE optical network terminals (ONTs) as well as the Calix 844G GigaCenter for its Gigabiz initiative in Jackson, WY.

With the expansion of Silver Star's fiber-optic broadband network to deliver speeds of up to 1 Gbps to both businesses and residents with a fiber connection, Jackson will become Wyoming's first gigabit community, the vendor asserts.

Silver Star has built out 120 miles of fiber since 2011 throughout western Wyoming and eastern Idaho. By interconnecting with the statewide fiber loops in both states, Silver Star has improved the level of broadband service for residents and business throughout the region. With its Gigabiz initiative, which is set to expand to other communities beyond Jackson (the nearby town of Thayne is next on the agenda), Silver Star is leveraging its ongoing investment in fiber to bring some of the best broadband speeds in the country to its customers.

"The Gigabiz initiative will be a game changer for Jackson, as the economic development possibilities are endless with this world-class fiber network in place," said Ron McCue, president and COO of Silver Star Communications. "We are located in a rural and mountainous area, so gigabit speeds are crucial to our ability to compete with urban areas as a destination for businesses. As a long-time Calix customer, we are excited to be partnering together to deliver Wyoming's first gigabit community, with more coming on the horizon, and take the next step to deliver carrier-class Wi-Fi to our customers through the GigaCenters."

In addition, Gigabiz subscribers will be some of the first in the country to enjoy a new connected gigabit experience enabled by the Calix 844G GigaCenters, which deliver 1-Gbps symmetrical wireline services and high-speed wireless speeds to all Wi-Fi enabled devices in the home via the latest 802.11ac "wave 2" Wi-Fi technology with 4x4 multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) antennas (see "Calix GigaCenters enable carrier-class home Wi-Fi").

"What a privilege it is that Jackson is going to be Wyoming's first gigabit community, an exclusive infrastructure advantage for our businesses, residents and civic organizations. I am so proud that this investment is being made by Silver Star in Jackson," said Mark Barron, mayor of Jackson.

The Silver Star Gigabiz network marks the 50th Calix-enabled gigabit community, the vendor notes.
