Tellabs says that SK Food Group has installed a passive optical LAN in its new manufacturing facility in Columbus, OH, to support a wide variety of communications needs. Fiber-optic network integrator STAT Communications performed the installation.

SK Food Group is a North American food manufacturing and assembly organization that serves restaurants, food service operators, and other retailers. The company is using Tellabs' Optical LAN equipment to support data, voice-over-IP (VoIP), wireless, surveillance, and manufacturing control services in its new facility, which began operations this past June. For example, the passive optical LAN provides backhaul and remote monitoring to improve wireless applications, such as Wi-Fi, Tellabs says. The combination of passive optical LAN with wireless equipment will save SK Food Group nearly $100,000 in wireless applications, Tellabs asserts.

The fiber-optic network offers a simpler architecture, with less equipment and cabling, than a copper-based LAN would require, Tellabs adds. The architecture means significant space savings and reconfigurability potential for moves, adds, and changes.

"Our new state-of-the-art facility required a technology that would meet the highest standards. The reputation of STAT Communications in combination with Tellabs' customer testimonials and proven performance made the decision easy," said Melissa Stone, manager of IT at SK Food Group. "Tellabs' Optical LAN gave us a future-proof network, better performance, and streamlined operations, while saving costs."
