TekLinks taps Transmode for Alabama metro network

Swedish systems vendor Transmode Systems AB announced that TekLinks has deployed a DWDM metro optical network in Birmingham, AL, based on Transmode's TM-Series platform. The new network will provide high-capacity links for TekLinks' data centers and provide scalable bandwidth to support its customers.

Swedish systems vendor Transmode Systems AB announced that TekLinks has deployed a DWDM metro optical network in Birmingham, AL, based on Transmode's TM-Series platform. The new network will provide high-capacity links for TekLinks' data centers and provide scalable bandwidth to support its customers.

TekLinks is an IT services provider that provides colocation, hosting, storage, virtualization, and cloud services across southern Mississippi, Tennessee, northern Alabama, and the Gulf coast.

The new optical network built by TekLinks is a three-node, 10G ring network that includes Transmode's recently-announced, high-density and low power Hex OTN Transponder cards ("Transmode unveils Hex transponder units supporting 96x10G"). TekLinks chose to build its own DWDM network in Birmingham after evaluating the cost and timescales of buying services from service providers in the area.

John East, director of network operations, said, "We needed to expand the capacity on our fiber network and moving to a DWDM network was the next logical step. We chose to build our own network to maintain control and give us the flexibility and scalability to best serve our customers both for now and into the future. Buying in high capacity services from an operator would have been comparatively expensive and given TekLinks very little flexibility. Deploying Transmode's TM-Series has been a very simple and cost effective solution."

Thanks to the quick delivery times, ease of installation and commissioning procedures of Transmode's TM-Series, the project proceeded rapidly from vendor selection to a live network, according to the vendor. TekLinks now has a high-capacity network to connect its own data centers, while also building a platform that allows the company to swiftly meet the likely future capacity demands of its customers.
