VI Systems offers 12x25G parallel optical test boards

Nov. 25, 2014
VI Systems GmbH has introduced its second generation of 12-channel parallel optical transmitter and receiver test boards for short-reach data communication up to 300 Gbps. The VHXT6212A-840 is designed for test environments with optical interconnects over distances up to 300 m.

VI Systems GmbH has introduced its second generation of 12-channel parallel optical transmitter and receiver test boards for short-reach data communication up to 300 Gbps. The VHXT6212A-840 is designed for test environments with optical interconnects over distances up to 300 m.

The high-speed optical link devices are based on 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) transmitter chip arrays and PIN photodetector arrays fiber coupled to multimode ribbon fiber.

The transmitter test board offers high-speed electrical input connectors for differential signal input for each channel and standard SMA connectors for the supply voltage. The optical output signal is generated from the proprietary 850-nm VCSEL chip array with 25 Gbps per channel that is fiber-coupled by a microlens array into a multi-lane ribbon fiber. Each output fiber is a 50/125-um multimode fiber. The ribbon fiber features a fan-out, which is terminated with 12xFC/PC connectors.

The driver electronics are compliant with InfiniBand EDR. The transmitter test board is specified with a power consumption of less than 200 mW per channel. The VCSEL driver circuit is programmable through a Windows-based computer via a USB-to-I2C bus converter.

On the receive side, the VHXR6212A-840 board features a proprietary 12-channel PIN photodetector chip array for 700 – 870-nm wavelength which is fiber-coupled by a microlens array optic with 50/125-um multimode ribbon fiber fan-out cable with 12xFC/PC connectors for the optical signal input.

The board offers high-speed differential electrical output connectors and SMA connectors for the power supply. The board features adjustable output swing size and pre-emphasis mode and signal detect threshold. The transmitter test board is specified with a power consumption of less than 180 mW per channel. The transimpedance amplifier is programmable through a Windows based computer via a USB-to-I2C bus converter.

VI Systems will show the test board at the Photonics West exhibition in booth #4601 in the German Pavilion.
