Northwestern Indiana Tel sees FTTH traffic double

Northwestern Indiana Telephone Co. (NITCO) saw the traffic on its fiber to the home (FTTH) network double in 2014, according to the service provider's broadband access equipment vendor, ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN). The jump comes from a combination of new subscribers and greater bandwidth demand per subscriber, ADTRAN reports.

Northwestern Indiana Telephone Co. (NITCO) saw the traffic on its fiber to the home (FTTH) network double in 2014, according to the service provider's broadband access network equipment vendor, ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN). The jump comes from a combination of new subscribers and greater bandwidth demand per subscriber, ADTRAN reports.

These trends should continue in 2015, as NITCO foresees bandwidth demand tripling this year, ADTRAN says.

One reason for the growth is the success of NITCO's 1-Gbps service offering for businesses. For example, national dairy farm Fair Oaks Farms uses the service to support remote monitoring of its milk production and processing. It also has deployed a hosted voice service and video streaming on-site, and manages orders online. The farm is creating learning centers for dairy, pork, and crop production to serve other farms as well as educate school children as well.

"The idea that gigabit services are only relevant in large cities or densely populated areas is being disproven by innovative service providers, like NITCO, that are leveraging the opportunity to create a new economic reality for the communities they support," said Mitch Fleming, regional vice president, sales, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division.
