Telecom Argentina says it has made significant progress on the first phase of a multi-phase project to add 100-Gbps capabilities to its national fiber-optic network. The upgrade leverages new DWDM technology from Huawei that will support 40 channels of 100-Gbps per fiber.

The first phase of the $210 million project involves three stages, with the first of these stages completed this past October. The enhanced DWDM technology was installed in 62 network nodes on fiber cable infrastructure that connects the cities of Buenos Aires, Rosario and Córdoba. In addition to adding capacity, the project also has added redundancy. Telecom Argentina expects to complete the other two stages by next month.

Subsequent phases of the project will see upgrades to the north and south. Eventually, the new capabilities will cover the entire country, from the coast, to the Mediterranean, south and to Cuyo, and to the northeast and northwest regions of the country, Telecom Argentina says.

The upgrade will support the deployment of a variety of IP-based services, including fixed and mobile telephony, Internet broadband, data services, and the future roll out of an LTE network.
