The Open Networking Foundation (ONF), which has been developing specifications, use cases, and other works designed to speed the adoption of open software-defined networking (SDN), has launched OpenSourceSDN.org, an open source software community and code repository. The ONF expects the site to aide those seeking to commercially deploy open SDN implementations while avoiding vendor lock-in.
"The launch of OpenSourceSDN.org further underscores our commitment to the ongoing commercialization of open source software worldwide," said Dan Pitt, executive director of the ONF. "We see open source software as a key route to developing de facto standards and fostering multi-vendor interoperability, both of which are top priorities for ONF. Our work in open source software development will continue to be complementary to both our own specifications work and the open source work done by other organizations, and we look forward to continued collaboration."
The ONF has established the Software Leadership Council (SLC), to oversee the project. The SLC will guide the ONF's open source software programs and online community development. Current members of the SLC include:

"The new Software Leadership Council and Open Source Software community are important next steps for the growth of open SDN," said Bailey, who is also founder and CTO of Infoblox. "I look forward to working with the other SLC members to develop new ONF programs, events, and activities that will drive the creation and adoption of open source software. We are building on the work done by ONF in the last two years – beginning with the OpenFlow Driver competition, followed by ONF SampleTap and the Segment Routing project SPRING-OPEN."
Among its other projects, the ONF has developed use cases and partnered in demos of Transport SDN for fiber-optic networks (see "OIF and ONF enjoy joint Transport SDN demonstration success").
