Coriant, Chunghwa Telecom trial transport SDN

Optical transport systems vendor Coriant says it has successfully performed a lab trial of transport software-defined networking (SDN) with Taiwan operator Chunghwa Telecom. The trial focused on using SDN to support high-capacity bandwidth-on-demand applications.

Optical transport systems vendor Coriant says it has successfully performed a lab trial of transport software-defined networking (SDN) with Taiwan operator Chunghwa Telecom. The trial focused on using SDN to support high-capacity bandwidth-on-demand applications.

The trial used Coriant's Transcend SDN Solution (see "Coriant offers SDN suite") to demonstrate dynamic and programmable allocation of multi-layer transmission resources, according to the systems house. The setup included the Coriant Transcend SDN transport controller, an OpenDaylight-based orchestrator, the Coriant hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform, and a web-based portal application that extends control of service attributes to end-user customers.

The trial saw activation of a 100-Gbps service connection as well as programmable adjustment of service-level agreement (SLA) parameters, including bandwidth and latency. The two parties also leveraged management capabilities designed to enable on-demand service control for the end-user as well as real-time visibility into SLA performance, end-to-end transmission resource allocation, and activity logs for service billing.

"SDN offers innovative approaches to increasing the flexibility of multi-layer transport infrastructure, and through this trial and other activities, we are looking to validate many of the features and capabilities of SDN that we believe will serve as the foundation for next generation networks."
