Deutsche Telekom partners with Huawei on IT and cloud

Deutsche Telekom says it will expand its current collaboration with Huawei to cover information technology (IT) infrastructure and private cloud networks. The partnership will leverage the cloud expertise of Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems and Huawei's hardware and technology skills.

"Deutsche Telekom is reinforcing its vendor-independence and, as of now, also offering IT products from Huawei at the best conditions in terms of price, service, and quality," said Eva Wimmers, senior vice president of group procurement at Deutsche Telekom. "Huawei has convinced us, technologically and commercially. This increases our global competitiveness and makes us particularly strong for small and medium-sized customers."

The partners are using the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany, to show off the first fruits of the collaboration. The two companies have created a mobile data center called "Rechenzentrum-to-go" (RZ2Go) at CeBIT in Hall 2, where the companies are demonstrating a mobile cloud data center for use on customers' premises. The approach sees all of the necessary systems, including servers, storage components, cooling systems, and power supply, preinstalled in a shipping container. The approach enables such a mobile data center to be delivered in a week, the companies assert.

T-Systems sees this "private cloud in a box" as valuable for applications that require rapid capacity expansion, disaster recovery, or for data centers in "special places," such as on oil rigs.
