Google Fiber targets Salt Lake City

Google Fiber says it will make Salt Lake City its next 1-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) market. The company didn't say when it will begin deploying its fiber-optic network infrastructure in the city, however.

Google Fiber says it will make Salt Lake City its next 1-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) market. The company didn't say when it will begin deploying its fiber-optic network infrastructure in the city, however.

Salt Lake City was listed as a potential target when Google Fiber announced in January that it planned to establish services in the Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham areas (see "Google Fiber to bring FTTH to four southeastern cities, looks at five more").Salt Lake City will join Provo as Google Fiber markets in Utah (see "Google Fiber launches business services in Provo").

Other cities on the potential to-do list include Phoenix, Portland, OR, San Antonio, and San Jose. The effort in Portland hit a pothole due to a new state tax law, reports The Oregonian. However, state law makers vow to address Google's concerns.

Google Fiber has operations up and running in Kansas City (Missouri and Kansas) and Austin, TX, as well as Provo.
