Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities taps Infinera for terabit R&E fiber-optic network enhancement

Open access transport service provider Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corp. (MBC) had deployed the DTN-X packet optical transport platform from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN), the two parties say. MBC has used the DTN-X to upgrade its fiber-optic network in Virginia to terabit scale to support the needs of its customers, particularly the Mid-Atlantic Research Infrastructure Alliance (MARIA).

Open access transport service provider Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corp. (MBC) had deployed the DTN-X packet optical transport platform from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN), the two parties say. MBC has used the DTN-X to upgrade its fiber-optic network in Virginia to terabit scale to support the needs of its customers, particularly the Mid-Atlantic Research Infrastructure Alliance (MARIA).

MARIA, in fact, helped fund the upgrade, which will enable support 100-Gbps connections to Internet2 as well as assist its university members in their collaborations with other research and development organizations and each other. The non-profit MARIA includes the College of William and Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech.

Founded in 2004, MBC is a longstanding Infinera customer, having deployed the company's optical transport equipment in its network since at least 2007 (see, for example, "Infinera announces new customer" and "Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative announces network expansion").

"Infinera's innovative optical transport solutions have been the foundation of MBC's open-access transport network since our inception," said Tad Deriso, president and CEO of MBC. "The upgraded MBC network continues to be operationally simple and will deliver initial capacity of four terabits per second while greatly improving our non-profit mission of promoting economic development and bridging the digital divide."
