Optical transport systems vendor ECI has strengthened its hand in the data center interconnect and cloud network markets with ElastiCLOUD, an approach that combines and augments several members of the company's portfolio.

The new solution set can support high capacity (25 Tbps per fiber, based on 128 channels of 200-Gbps each), low power consumption (85 W/100G), high density, and secure transmission, ECI asserts. Based on the specific requirement, ElastiCLOUD may leverage several elements of ECI's SmartLight systems and software roster, including:

  • the Apollo and Neptune packet-optical transport systems
  • LightApps software-defined networking (SDN) applications for dynamic bandwidth allocation, service scheduling and network automation
  • the LightSoft network management system
  • the LightSec cyber security suite.

ECI foresees the ElastiCLOUD offering as applicable to cloud connectivity, SAN connectivity and data center interconnect backbones.

ElastiCLOUD capabilities are currently available, according to Andreas Hegers, head of corporate and portfolio marketing at ECI. He reports that "there are serious discussions and a great deal of interest, including from big names" regarding the new capabilities.
