HKT deploys XG-PON from Huawei for 10-Gbps FTTH

May 11, 2015
Huawei says it has supplied 10-Gbps XG-PON equipment to Hong Kong’s HKT to support the carrier’s offering of 10-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) services. The deployment is now in its pilot phase, but HKT plans to offer 10 Gbps to all of its current GPON customers by the third quarter of this year.

HKT is using Huawei’s new MA5800 optical line terminal (OLT) and an XG-PON gateway optical network terminal (ONT) for the pilot. The current trial offers users 10-Gbps Internet downstream and 1-Gbps Wi-Fi and 5-Gbps USB 3.0 in-home, says Huawei. The company did not reveal what upstream speeds HKT is offering.

Huawei suggests that HKT will use the high-bandwidth pipe to support delivery of 4K video, including the ability "to select their preferred 4K camera viewing angle."

The deployment, along with the announcements that Alcatel-Lucent and CommScope will soon offer 10G-EPON platforms, indicates a growing interest in 10-Gbps PON equipment (see "Alcatel-Lucent FX-12 addresses 10G EPON interest" and "CommScope to unveil 10G EPON OLT at INTX").
