Despite the attention being paid to 100G in the metro, Transmode has seen a continued requirement for 10-Gbps technology. The optical transport systems vendor has responded with the EMXP IIe 240, a new platform for high-density, low power 10G Ethernet switching for metro-edge packet-optical transport applications.
As its name implies, the new EMXP IIe 240 unit extends the switching and port density of Transmode's EMXP IIe portfolio via support for 240G non-blocking switching and 24x10G ports on a single plug-in unit. Each port can support either client or long reach (1,500 to 2,000 km) optics, including tunable DWDM optics. The unit also offers forward error correction (FEC) via standard GFEC or super-FEC options.
Besides high port density, the EMXP IIe 240 offers power consumption of 5W per 10G port, even when DWDM optics are used in all ports, Transmode asserts.
"The metro P-OTS market is the fastest growing segment of the optical networking industry and one that Transmode already serves well via a unique family of packet-optical transport switches, the EMXP family," said Magnus Grenfeldt, Transmode's vice president, product management. "This new family member extends our 10G capabilities both in terms of switching capacity and density and forms the ideal base to feed the migration to 100G deeper in the network."
Transmode's EMXP II/IIe family offers optical and Ethernet transmission capabilities, including MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) services, MPLS-TP, and Optical Transport Network (OTN) support. The portfolio supports 1, 10, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities for applications ranging from the customer premise to the core network. Recent software releases 1+1 and N+N Multi-Chassis LAG and Ring on LAG protection schemes.
