euNetworks rolls out 200G DWDM with Ciena

European fiber-optic network services provider euNetworks says it has upgraded portions of its DWDM network to support 200-Gbps wavelengths. The deployment, the first in Europe according to euNetworks, leverages the network's 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms from Ciena Corp. (NYSE:CIEN).

The 200-Gbps links run on diverse paths between Slough, to the West of London, to London Docklands in the East (see "euNetworks expands low-latency European finance network" and "euNetworks plans significant expansion in London"). The service provider says the new capacity capabilities improve its ability to deliver 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) services. In fact, one "cloud customer" has contracted for 100GbE capacity totaling 1.2 Tbps, part of a total of more than 6 Tbps the customer is using across euNetworks' pan-European fiber cable footprint.

The 100GbE capabilities are part of euNetworks' euSpectrum DWDM offering. The service provider leverages 13 fiber-based metropolitan networks, and states it potentially could expand its 100GbE offering to more than 260 data centers. The company has built its pan-European infrastructure through a combination of new builds and acquisitions (see, for example, "euNetworks opens new Frankfurt to Zurich fiber network route").

"Our euSpectrum bandwidth solution and position as the leading data center connectivity provider in Europe offers a unique and highly scalable networking solution to our customers," assrted Brady Rafuse, CEO of euNetworks. "We are working with some of the world's biggest consumers of bandwidth, shaping our network for their growing needs. The nature of our business is such that our network designs are driven exclusively by the needs of our customers. We believe we are one of the leading European providers in the 100G bandwidth market today and with this important milestone of adding 200G capability to the network, we continue to offer our customers the next step in high bandwidth network scalability."
