Verizon taps Mesosphere for data center service orchestration

Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) says it will use Mesosphere's Datacenter Operating System (DCOS) for data center service orchestration later this year.

Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) says it will use Mesosphere's Datacenter Operating System (DCOS) for data center service orchestration later this year.

The service provider says that use of the Mesosphere DCOS, which is based on the open source cluster manager Apache Mesos, will enable Verizon Labs developers to operate data centers as a single, cohesive entity. Verizon Labs teams will be able to create rules and complex scripts to automate data center operations. Thus, they can scale new services quickly using existing capacity and without manual configuration.

The new capability will accelerate deployment of a wide range of new products and services, such as connected devices and machines, video services, Internet services, storage and mobile applications, as well as big data and analytics, Verizon says.

"Verizon is committed to unleashing the full potential of open source, data center cluster technology and cloud applications for the highest possible customer experience," said Kumar Vishwanathan, vice president and chief technologist for Verizon Labs. "Mesosphere DCOS gives Verizon the foundation to create far-reaching benefits by increasing our ability to quickly launch new products and services while reducing the IT requirements in our data centers."

The announcement comes within the overall context of Verizon's efforts to provide more flexibility to its network and constituent resources, including the embrace of software defined networking concepts (SDN; see "Verizon announces major SDN transmission technology partners").
