Optical transport systems vendor Xtera Communications, Inc. reports that equipment for its second repeatered submarine network deployment has completed loading. The gear will be deployed within the next 2 months in the Atlantic Ocean, following an upgrade to the High capacity, Undersea Guernsey Optical-fiber (HUGO) undersea cable system.

The HUGO submarine fiber-optic network connects Porthcurno and Guernsey in the UK with Lannion in France. Xtera's wideband repeaters have already been inserted into the existing submarine cable plant near Lannion to increase system capacity.

Xtera says it has supplied 10 repeaters for a follow-on submarine cable system of approximately 1,500 km. The system loading took place at the Nexans cable factory in Rognan, Norway. A company source said the repeaters are designed to be used in a variety of undersea applications, including building new subsea infrastructure, upgrading existing cable assets under water, or recovering and re-laying existing cable infrastructure.
