Unlike traditional multimode fiber, the new LaserWave FLEX WideBand Multimode Fiber is specifically designed to meet the demands of today's OM4 networks, while extending the OM4 capability over multiple wavelengths, from 850 nm to 950 nm, using shortwave wavelength-division multiplexing (SWDM).
Unlike traditional multimode fiber, the new LaserWave FLEX WideBand Multimode Fiber is specifically designed to meet the demands of today's OM4 networks, while extending the OM4 capability over multiple wavelengths, from 850 nm to 950 nm, using shortwave wavelength-division multiplexing (SWDM). This capability allows multiple lanes of traffic over the same strand of fiber, helping to significantly improve the bandwidth capacity of multimode fiber.

Using SWDM, LaserWave FLEX WideBand Multimode Fiber increases transmission capacity by up to 400% without increasing the fiber count of the cables used. In this way, service providers can gain greater capacity and faster speeds using less fiber and lower count cables, resulting in savings of both time and money while reducing cable congestion. In addition, LaserWave FLEX WideBand Multimode Fiber helps to maintain the cost advantages of multimode fiber for short-distance applications (up to 300 m or more) while also helping to future proof networks by readying them for tomorrow's 400 Gbps and higher speeds.

LaserWave FLEX WideBand Multimode Fiber complies with OM4 optical fiber requirements and is totally backward compatible with existing OM4 networks and applications. Not all competing solutions provide this capability, OFS asserts.
