Fibrant offers 10-Gbps FTTP in Salisbury, NC

Municipally owned service provider Fibrant is slated to announce today at 2:00 PM EDT that it will offer 10-Gbps broadband services via a fiber to the premises (FTTP) architecture in its home city of Salisbury, NC. Salisbury's Catawba College will be the initial customer for the fiber-optic broadband service, the first of its kind in the U.S. according to the service provider and its FTTP equipment supplier, Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX).

RAD adds GPON, VDSL2 support to Carrier Ethernet demarcation

Communications equipment vendor RAD says it has added support of GPON and VDSL2 (including bonding/vectoring) to its Layer 2/Layer 3 demarcation devices and ETX-2 and ETX-2i routers. The new modules add to the platforms' existing support of active fiber, SDHSL, and PDH.

MACOM intros GPON transimpedance amplifier

Communications silicon provider M/A-COM Technology Solutions Inc. (MACOM; NASDAQ:MTSI) has unveiled the M02027, a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for GPON optical network terminals (ONTs). It also may be used for SONET, CPRI base station, and SFF/SFP optical transceiver applications.

Verizon plans NG-PON2 first office deployments early in 2016

ADTRAN signals support of multivendor FTTH networks

ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN) has made it easier for its fiber-optic broadband access equipment to be paired with elements of competitors' portfolios. The systems house has announced the availability of open APIs on its multiservice access nodes (MSANs) and G.fast distribution point nodes and MDU nodes for fiber to the home/building (FTTH/B). It also has unveiled a line of universal optical network terminals (ONTs) designed to be compatible with competitors' FTTH PON optical line terminals (OLTs).

ADTRAN service orchestration aims for gigabit FTTH service deployment efficiency

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) has announced service orchestration capabilities via what it calls "Captive Portal" that, in combination with a new line of gigabit Wi-Fi optical network terminals, can reduce gigabit fiber to the home (FTTH) service turn-up by as much as 10X, the company claims. The new FTTH capabilities were developed in consultation with "several key customers" and have already reached the field.

Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) says it has successfully completed a field test of NG-PON2 technology on its fiber to the premises (FTTP) network. The test used equipment from Cisco and PT Inovação. The service provider says it plans to issue an RFP later this year to buy NG-PON2 gear.

Cisco sells set-top box business to Technicolor

Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has agreed to sell its customer premises equipment (CPE) business for cash and stock totaling €550 million (or $600 million equivalent) to French firm Technicolor (Euronext Paris: TCH; OTCQX: TCLRY). The companies have also agreed to collaborate on video and broadband technology and services.

Telnet Redes offers interoperable GPON ONT

The GPON ONT features an integrated gateway and provides interoperability with a variety of optical line terminals (OLTs, including, of course, TELNET's) to provide fiber to the home (FTTH) service providers greater flexibility.

First quarter 2015 broadband CPE revenues, units gain versus year ago

Makers of broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) saw good news in the first quarter of 2015 – as long as they looked back far enough for a frame of reference, says a new report from IHS (NYSE: IHS). Compared to the year-ago quarter, revenues in 1Q15 climbed 3% and shipments rose 9%. Sequentially, however, revenue shrank 2% to $2.8 billion on flat unit shipments of 54 million, according to the market research firm.

Alcatel-Lucent wins Broadband China framework deals with China Mobile and China Unicom

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has signed wide-ranging frame agreements with China Mobile and China Unicom to supply a variety of systems and technology to meet Broadband China targets. The deal with China Mobile is worth RMB4.53 billion ($729.9 million) and the agreement with China Unicom is worth RMB3.59 billion ($578.4 million).

Calix offers NG-PON2 TWDM PON support

Broadband access network gear supplier Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says it will add NG-PON2 TWDM PON capabilities to its E7 Ethernet Service Access Platforms and associated optical network terminals. It appears the company also will offer a new high-capacity cards that will improve the E7's switching and uplink capabilities for other central office and data center applications.

Worldwide PON interest to drive FTTx optics market beyond $1 billion this year

Worldwide demand for PON gear should enable sales of FTTx optics to follow last year's record-breaking performance with even better results in 2015, market research firm Ovum asserts in its newly released "OC FTTx Forecast Spreadsheet: 2014–20." Revenues for such optics, which include optical transceivers as well as bi-directional optical subassemblies (BOSAs), should surpass $1 billion this year, Ovum predicts.

G.fast residential gateway on tap from Alcatel-Lucent

The 7368 ISAM CPE also will support reverse powering of a G.fast distribution point unit (DPU), as well as dual-band Wi-Fi that will provide 1-Gbps wireless networking in the home.

Sckipio offers G.fast reference designs, including G.fast on a stick

Communications IC startup Sckipio Technologies has unveiled a trio of reference designs for CPE that leverage the company's G.fast silicon (see "G.fast chipsets from Sckipio Technologies debut"). They include a design for an SFP optical transceiver that incorporates G.fast silicon for use in a variety of CPE, including residential gateways and business services network interface devices (NIDs).

AT&T, ON.Lab to lead CORD proof-of-concept demonstration

ON.Lab, developers of the Open Network Operating System (ONOS), says it will join with AT&T (NYSE:T), the ONOS project, PMC-Sierra (NASDAQ:PMCS), and G.fast chip vendor Sckipio to publically demonstrate a Central Office Re-architected as Data Center (CORD) proof-of-concept (POC). The demonstration will take place at next week's Open Networking Summit  in Santa Clara.
