IEEE ratifies SIEPON standard for EPON interoperability

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) ratified IEEE 1904.1 Standard for Service Interoperability in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (SIEPON) at its recent Standards Board meeting on June 14, 2013. The new standard provides open, international, system-level specifications to enable multi-vendor, "plug-and-play" interoperability in EPON systems.

Calix offers home gateway software for 700GE ONTs

Choosing between RF and optical automatic gain control

How automatic gain control (AGC) is implemented in the ONT receiver is critically important. Unlike the case of baseband light modulation, RF-modulated light requires special attention to distortion, noise, and other performance factors to preserve good customer experience. Optimization of relevant receiver parameters such as noise, distortion, and gain flatness forces unpleasant tradeoffs and hard choices that ultimately can increase design complexity and cost. Thus, one of the most important decisions a designer needs to make is the preferred AGC method within the ONT receiver.

Dutch cable operator Rekam expands RFoG network

Dutch cable-TV provider Rekam is using equipment from Pacific Broadband Networks BV to expand its network in Lekkerkerk, The Netherlands, a city east of Rotterdam. Rekam is building a fiber-optic network based on RF over glass (RFoG) that will pass every house in Lekkerkerk, and expects to connect several thousand customers annually.

Independent telco Marne Elk Horn Telephone has installed the Total Access 5000 broadband access platform from ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) in its new fiber to the home (FTTH) network, according to the systems house. The fiber-optic network will provide IPTV, high-speed internet and high-definition video to local schools, residential subscribers, and business customers in Marne Elk Horn’s Southern Iowa footprint.
