Alcatel-Lucent, Vodafone tout TWDM-PON field trial

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Vodafone have partnered on a field trial of the systems house's Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network (TWDM-PON) fiber-optic broadband technology. The activity is the first field trial of TWDM-PON in Europe, the testers assert.

Cisco sells set-top box business to Technicolor

Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has agreed to sell its customer premises equipment (CPE) business for cash and stock totaling €550 million (or $600 million equivalent) to French firm Technicolor (Euronext Paris: TCH; OTCQX: TCLRY). The companies have also agreed to collaborate on video and broadband technology and services.

Telnet Redes offers interoperable GPON ONT

Spanish intelligent network technology supplier Telnet Redes Inteligentes has unveiled its latest GPON optical network terminal (ONT), the WaveAccess 3021. The GPON ONT features an integrated gateway and provides interoperability with a variety of optical line terminals (OLTs, including, of course, TELNET's) to provide fiber to the home (FTTH) service providers greater flexibility.

Zhone offers indoor GPON ONT for triple-play via passive optical LAN

Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) has expanded its portfolio for passive optical LANs with a pair of new indoor GPON optical network terminals (ONTs). The 2625p and 2645p GPON ONTs support both RF video and Power over Ethernet (PoE) to supply triple-play services via passive optical LAN in such multi-room deployments as hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and university dorms.

First quarter 2015 broadband CPE revenues, units gain versus year ago

Makers of broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) saw good news in the first quarter of 2015 – as long as they looked back far enough for a frame of reference, says a new report from IHS (NYSE: IHS). Compared to the year-ago quarter, revenues in 1Q15 climbed 3% and shipments rose 9%. Sequentially, however, revenue shrank 2% to $2.8 billion on flat unit shipments of 54 million, according to the market research firm.

Alcatel-Lucent wins Broadband China framework deals with China Mobile and China Unicom

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has signed wide-ranging frame agreements with China Mobile and China Unicom to supply a variety of systems and technology to meet Broadband China targets. The deal with China Mobile is worth RMB4.53 billion ($729.9 million) and the agreement with China Unicom is worth RMB3.59 billion ($578.4 million).

Calix offers NG-PON2 TWDM PON support

Broadband access network gear supplier Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says it will add NG-PON2 TWDM PON capabilities to its E7 Ethernet Service Access Platforms and associated optical network terminals. It appears the company also will offer a new high-capacity cards that will improve the E7's switching and uplink capabilities for other central office and data center applications.

Worldwide PON interest to drive FTTx optics market beyond $1 billion this year

Worldwide demand for PON gear should enable sales of FTTx optics to follow last year's record-breaking performance with even better results in 2015, market research firm Ovum asserts in its newly released "OC FTTx Forecast Spreadsheet: 2014–20." Revenues for such optics, which include optical transceivers as well as bi-directional optical subassemblies (BOSAs), should surpass $1 billion this year, Ovum predicts.

G.fast residential gateway on tap from Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has unveiled a G.fast residential gateway designed for plug-and-play installation by the customer. The 7368 ISAM CPE also will support reverse powering of a G.fast distribution point unit (DPU), as well as dual-band Wi-Fi that will provide 1-Gbps wireless networking in the home.

Sckipio offers G.fast reference designs, including G.fast on a stick

Communications IC startup Sckipio Technologies has unveiled a trio of reference designs for CPE that leverage the company's G.fast silicon (see "G.fast chipsets from Sckipio Technologies debut"). They include a design for an SFP optical transceiver that incorporates G.fast silicon for use in a variety of CPE, including residential gateways and business services network interface devices (NIDs).

AT&T, ON.Lab to lead CORD proof-of-concept demonstration

ON.Lab, developers of the Open Network Operating System (ONOS), says it will join with AT&T (NYSE:T), the ONOS project, PMC-Sierra (NASDAQ:PMCS), and G.fast chip vendor Sckipio to publically demonstrate a Central Office Re-architected as Data Center (CORD) proof-of-concept (POC). The demonstration will take place at next week's Open Networking Summit  in Santa Clara.

2015 broadband equipment sales start strong but may not finish that way

First quarter sales of DSL, PON, and point-to-point Ethernet fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband aggregation equipment grew by 14% year-over-year, according to the latest figures from IHS (NYSE: IHS). However, the market research firm believes the space will end 2015 down versus 2014.

Calix offers G.fast for MDUs

Broadband access network equipment developer Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) has introduced three platforms that leverage G.fast technology to support high-speed broadband service delivery over copper networks. The company believes is E3-16F sealed distribution point unit (SDPU) node, 870F MDU services delivery node, and 844F GigaCenter, will find most of their use in fiber to the building applications such as multiple dwelling unit (MDU), multi-tenant unit (MTU), and "high density" single-family unit installations.

Energia Communications tests G.fast, TWDM-PON in Japan

IEEE ponders WDM-PON, 25G PON for next generation EPON

The IEEE has released the results of an investigation into the necessity and potential requirements for EPON systems beyond the current top end of 10G EPON. The document, "IEEE 802.3™ Industry Connections Feasibility Assessment for the Next Generation of EPON," concludes that both an aggregate 40-Gbps multi-wavelength approach and a single-wavelength approach that would support 25 Gbps are worth considering.

HKT deploys XG-PON from Huawei for 10-Gbps FTTH

Huawei says it has supplied 10-Gbps XG-PON equipment to Hong Kong’s HKT to support the carrier’s offering of 10-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) services. The deployment is now in its pilot phase, but HKT plans to offer 10 Gbps to all of its current GPON customers by the third quarter of this year.
