Hybrid GPON/G.fast distribution point unveiled by Telnet Redes Inteligentes

Telnet Redes Inteligentes S. A. has introduced a Hybrid Fiber-Copper Access Distribution Point (HFCA-DP). The platform is the first to combine GPON and G.fast distribution point equipment (DPE) capabilities in a manner fully interoperable with Alcatel Lucent and Huawei GPON optical line terminals (OLTs), the company asserts.

iPhotonix buys Netsocket NFV assets, launches optical access platform

Fiber to the home (FTTH) technology developer iPhotonix has acquired the network functions virtualization (NFV) assets of Netsocket, Inc. and used them to create a new NFV platform for broadband access networks. The iPhotonix Virtual Network (iVN) platform will provide scalable, secure, and agile delivery of enterprise and cloud-based applications, the company asserts.

Gigabit FTTH drives record broadband sales says Infonetics

The exploding interest in gigabit broadband helped create record sales of broadband aggregation equipment in 2014, according to Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS). With GPON equipment leading the way, global spending on broadband aggregation equipment jumped 9% percent in 2014, to $8.2 billion, the market research firm reveals in its upcoming "PON, FTTH, and DSL Aggregation Equipment" report.

AEPONYX to launch C-Band 10G WDM-PON at OFC 2015

Montreal-based WDM-PON specialist AEPONYX inc. says it will take the wraps off of what it asserts is the first standards-based 10-Gbps 40-channel WDM-PON offering at OFC 2015. The single-fiber system is designed to operate on the C-Band 50-GHz ITU grid.

Tellabs to show 10-Gbps passive optical LAN gear at BICSI Winter

Passive optical LAN technology supplier Tellabs says it will use this week's BICSI Winter Conference & Exhibition to show off a 10 Gigabit Ethernet version of its offering. The in-house development is designed to ensure that very high bandwidth enterprise and campus network requirements can be met via a passive optical LAN.

Alcatel-Lucent lowers entry cost of TWDM-PON with Universal TWDM

Acknowledging that current TWDM-PON systems – and particularly the tunable optics they require – are too expensive for most customers, Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has introduced a more economical WDM-PON variant. The new Universal TWDM approach replaces the comparatively expensive tunable 10-Gbps optical transceivers with fixed optical modules.

Washington State University deploys passive optical LAN with Zhone

Fiber-optic broadband access equipment supplier Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Washington State University (WSU) has deployed the company's FiberLAN passlive optical LAN gear. The deployment, conducted in partnership with Leidos Engineering, will boost the broadband access speeds available to the university's on-campus housing.

GreenTouch, a global ICT consortium focused on improving the energy efficiency of communications networks, has complemented its earlier work on energy-saving PON architectures (see "Bit-Interleaved PON offers dramatic FTTH power savings, says GreenTouch") with two new ideas aimed at broadband access networks. The group has unveiled designs for a point-to-point optical transceiver and virtual home gateway that GreenTouch asserts could reduce wireline access network energy consumption by a combined 46%.

A drop in sales of DSL equipment negated continued growth in PON equipment demand in the third quarter of 2014, says market research firm Infonetics Research in its 3Q14 "PON, FTTH, and DSL Aggregation Equipment and Subscribers" report. The $2 billion in sales for the quarter represented a 1% sequential fall off, according to the report.

Sumitomo Electric launches 10G-EPON line cards

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has released 10G symmetrical EPON line cards for use with its FSU7100 series of optical line terminals (OLT). The FCM7133 line cards support 10X the bandwidth of the current 1G line cards to service the growing needs of both commercial and residential broadband applications, the company says.
