IEEE ponders WDM-PON, 25G PON for next generation EPON

The IEEE has released the results of an investigation into the necessity and potential requirements for EPON systems beyond the current top end of 10G EPON. The document, "IEEE 802.3™ Industry Connections Feasibility Assessment for the Next Generation of EPON," concludes that both an aggregate 40-Gbps multi-wavelength approach and a single-wavelength approach that would support 25 Gbps are worth considering.

ADTRAN unveils NG-PON2 platform for 10G PON, TWDM PON

Believing that a growing number of carriers would like to combine business and residential services delivery over a single PON architecture, ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) has announced its intention to add NG-PON2 capabilities to its flagship Total Access 5000 platform. The upcoming new features will support the time-division/wavelength-division multiplexed (TWDM) PON architecture most closely associated with the ITU/FSAN NG-PON2 specifications, as well as enable 10 Gigabit GPON, 10 Gigabit EPON, point-to-point DWDM, and GPON architectures.

HKT deploys XG-PON from Huawei for 10-Gbps FTTH

Huawei says it has supplied 10-Gbps XG-PON equipment to Hong Kong’s HKT to support the carrier’s offering of 10-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) services. The deployment is now in its pilot phase, but HKT plans to offer 10 Gbps to all of its current GPON customers by the third quarter of this year.

CommScope to unveil 10G EPON OLT at INTX

CommScope (NASDAQ: COMM) plans to use next week's Internet and Television Expo (INTX) in Chicago to show off a new 10G EPON optical line terminal (OLT). Based on DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE), the C9516 EPON OLT would appear to be well timed, given Comcast's plans for symmetrical 2-Gbps services via fiber to the home (FTTH; see "Comcast one ups Google Fiber, AT&T with 2-Gbps broadband in Atlanta").

Gigabit FTTH drives record broadband sales says Infonetics

The exploding interest in gigabit broadband helped create record sales of broadband aggregation equipment in 2014, according to Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS). With GPON equipment leading the way, global spending on broadband aggregation equipment jumped 9% percent in 2014, to $8.2 billion, the market research firm reveals in its upcoming "PON, FTTH, and DSL Aggregation Equipment" report.

AEPONYX to launch C-Band 10G WDM-PON at OFC 2015

The deployment, conducted in partnership with Leidos Engineering, will boost the broadband access speeds available to the university's on-campus housing.
