As cable-TV service providers have evolved to multiple systems operators (MSOs), they now rely on fiber optics to deliver broadband voice, video, and data services.

The growing bandwidth demand on cable MSO backbones from triple- and quadruple-play broadband service provision has led to increasing use of WDM, DWDM, ROADM, and other fiber-optic systems. MSOs must evolve these networks for efficient transport of Ethernet and IP packets as well.
