SM Optics launches LIGHTMODE LM-1 micro WSS-free metro ROADM

June 28, 2018
SM Optics has unveiled the LIGHTMODE LM-1 micro ROADM, which is based on a stackable design to expand seamlessly, covering any capacity growth and affordably managing any configuration. SM Optics asserts the multi-degree ROADM open line system combines disaggregated platform flexibility with low-cost, wavelength-selective switch (WSS) -free architecture.

SM Optics, part of the SIAE Microelettronica Group, has unveiled the LIGHTMODE LM-1 micro ROADM, which is based on a stackable design to expand seamlessly, covering any capacity growth and affordably managing any configuration. SM Optics asserts the multi-degree ROADM open line system combines disaggregated platform flexibility with low-cost, wavelength-selective switch (WSS) -free architecture.

The company describes the LIGHTMODE LM-1 as a disaggregated WDM functional block offering multi-degree ROADM functionality in a single rack unit. It is designed to support any lambda capacity rate via a grid-less and filter-less optical multiplexer. The micro ROADM is compatible with software-defined networking (SDN) orchestration models, particularly through SM Optics' HomeLightcontroller, an optical network domain controller that embeds path computation and network design capabilities. SM Optics says it demonstrated HomeLight as part of the OIF multivendor SDN Transport API (T-API) interoperability demonstration (see "OIF and MEF collaborate on 2018 SDN transport demonstration").

SM Optics has supplied packet-optical transport systems and WDM equipment, as well as network management and network engineering services in the past. In 2016, Italy's Uno Communications awarded a contract to SM Optics for a fiber-optic network transformation project (see "SM Optics to aid Uno Communications in MPLS network transformation project"). The company launched in 2014 in part via the acquisition of R&D assets from Alcatel-Lucent (see "Alcatel-Lucent transfers optics R&D to Italy's SM Optics").
