Nokia says it has signed a long-term agreement with Oi to supply the Brazilian service provider with fixed and mobile systems to support improved broadband access in the country. The communications technology company says it will provide radio access, IP and optical transport, and fixed broadband systems and services to Oi, which is launching a network refresh.
Oi is looking to spread its fiber to the home (FTTH) footprint as well as improve mobile services capability, the latter with an eye toward introducing 5G in the future. The service provider hopes to connect up to 10 million homes in Brazil by 2021.
To support this initiative, Nokia says it will supply its 7360 ISAM FX access node and 7368 ISAM optical network terminal (ONT) for FTTH. The fixed broadband network will benefit from a fiber backbone network that will employ Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch and 7750 Service Routers. The two platforms will support up 10 Tbps on Oi’s fiber backbone infrastructure, Nokia says. The company also will supply Nokia AirScale single radio access network technology for mobile services support.
Nokia also will supply its AVA cognitive services platform for enhanced network and service operations through support of automation and analytics. The two companies also have signed an agreement that enables Oi to resell Nokia’s WiFi beacons in its retail outlets. The beacons enable WiFi mesh topologies to improve in-home networking.
"We expect that this long-term technology partnership agreement will allow us to consolidate our suppliers and benefit from greater operational efficiencies as we continue our restructuring process," said Eurico Teles, CEO of Oi.
