Data center services provider Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) has announced plans to enter a pair of new markets. The company says it will open new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center facilities in Seoul, South Korea, and Hamburg, Germany.

In Seoul, the new SL1 carrier neutral data center will offer more than 18,000 square feet (approximately 1,680 square meters) of colocation space and an initial capacity of 550 cabinets in the first phase. The facility will be located at Sangam, known as Digital Media City, near Seoul's central business district. Equinix expects SL1 to open in the third quarter of this year, at which point the company will offer cross connects, Equinix Connect, Equinix Internet Exchange, and Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (ECX Fabric) connectivity.

In Hamburg, Equinix has bought a commercial building at Vierenkamp 1, from Aspen REG 1. Management GmbH for $11 million. The company says it will spend an additional $25 million to redevelop the space in phase one to create Equinix HH1. This facility also should be online in the third quarter of 2019. Equinix says HH1 will have 375 cabinets by the end of phase one, with space to expand to 1875 cabinets at full build. The Hamburg location places HH1 near the North Sea, making the site a good one for interconnection with submarine cable landing stations; Hamburg is a top interconnection point for cables connecting to Frankfurt, Equinix says.

Hamburg will be the fourth German city in which Equinix operates IBXs. The company has nine facilities across Frankfurt, Munich, and Dusseldorf. Overall, Equinix operates more than 200 IBX data centers in 52 markets.
