DASAN Zhone Solutions, Inc. (DZS; NASDAQ: DZSI) has unveiled the 5200 family of multi-protocol 10G optical network terminals (ONTs) and smart gateways. The family includes support of symmetrical 10G PON architectures as well as Active Ethernet approaches.

The ONTs leverage SFP+ optics for easier connectivity within existing FTTx networks, including those that support enterprise business subscribers over a common network. The 5200 line’s first models carry one fixed 10G copper LAN port and four Gigabit Ethernet ports, with options for voice or PoE+/PoE++. Future models will support NG-PON2 “as the availability and price/performance of optics make a positive business case,” according to DZS.

“Offering our customers a common platform with choice among technologies and form factors is core to our 10G solution development. In this way, DZS can best serve the diverse needs of operators across the globe,” commented Dr. Seungdong Lee, CTO at DZS. “We believe that 10/10 symmetrical XGS-PON is the best upgrade path to evaluate in 2019. Our portfolio of modular chassis, fixed 1RU, and industrially hardened systems has been designed to provide choices to operators as they plan ahead for the fundamental shift toward cloud-based everything.”

“Many operators plan to take a step-wise approach when expanding their networks using 10G GPON technologies, aligned with the specific needs of their business,” confirmed Teresa Mastrangelo, principal analyst at Broadbandtrends, via a DZS press release. “A large majority of these service providers will focus on XGS-PON for the first phase of their rollouts, while future-proofing their networks for the advantages of NG-PON2”
