AT&T (NYSE:T) plans to launch gigabit Internet speeds in parts of 11 new metro areas under its newly created AT&T Fiber umbrella brand. Part of the AT&T Fiber rebranding includes changing the name of AT&T GigaPower, the company's 1 Gbps Internet service, to AT&T Internet 1000.

The 11 additional metro areas planned to launch are:

  • Florida: Gainesville and Panama City
  • Georgia: Columbus
  • Kentucky: Central Kentucky
  • Louisiana: Lafayette
  • Mississippi: Biloxi-Gulfport and Northeast Mississippi
  • North Carolina: Wilmington
  • Tennessee: Southeastern Tennessee and Knoxville
  • Texas: Corpus Christi

AT&T says the expansion increases its commitment to bring gigabit service to at least 67 metro areas (56 previously), with plans to launch in parts of 45 metro areas by the end of this year. The company currently offers 1 Gbps Internet service in parts of 29 metro areas.
