"The PON market drove the overall market with an impressive 25% Y/Y increase to a record level," wrote Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell'Oro. "The three largest service providers in China - China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile - drove the market as these operators have substantially increased their deployments of PON customer premises equipment (ONTs). Although demand in China has grown significantly, this quarter we also saw an increase in PON demand in North America, where both larger tier 1 service providers as well as many smaller regional operators have been investing in their fiber infrastructures in order to offer gigabit services. Both the DSL and cable markets fell this quarter. DSL's decline was due to older technology (ADSL) falling at a much faster rate than newer technology (VDSL) could grow."
