New England telco FairPoint Communications (NASDAQ:FRP) announced plans to launch symmetrical 1 Gbps fiber-based Internet service in Portsmouth, NH, and certain surrounding communities. The company says the planned deployment will be FairPoint's first for gigabit Internet service to residential customers.
The service will be available for a limited time at promotional prices starting at $84.99 per month for consumers and $145.99 per month for businesses. Along with Portsmouth, FairPoint's new gigabit service will be available in December to residents and businesses in parts of Greenland, New Castle, Newington, Rye, and Stratham, NH.
FairPoint is also introducing several new Internet service tiers, with downstream speeds from 150 Mbps up to 1 Gbps and upstream speeds from 75 Mbps up to 1 Gbps.
In August, FairPoint accepted $37 million in CAF funding to expand rural broadband.
