Cisco Systems cBR-8 Evolved CCAP

The cBR-8 is a next-generation Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) designed from the ground up for DOCSIS 3.1. It converges all DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 data services previously managed by CMTS and MPEG video services previously managed by edge QAM modulators into a single chassis.

The cBR-8 offers 6,000 downstream channels, compared to competitive products, which offer around 1,720 DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channels, Cisco says. With its high capacity design, the cBR-8 will help operators meet bandwidth growth for the next five to 10 years and will provide 40% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for the next five years using ATCA-based chassis. However, the vision for the cBR-8 extends beyond five years and will utilize Cisco's expertise in software design, SDN and virtualization, the company says.

Additionally, the cBR-8 supports distributed CCAP architecture with remote PHY, which offers cable operators the chance to increase service revenue with more service groups and more bits per Hertz for the network. Only one access network is needed for both residential and business services.
